Rainbow Mountain 2 Days/1 Night

This two days trek to the Rainbow Mountain of Peru are going to leave you with a memorable experience, On this 2 days of hiking you will observe a wonderful night amongst some of the shimmering stars, a milky way so colorful and the constellations of southern hemisphere, you will be startled. This new trek will spellbound you constantly. With a combination of amazing landscapes, snowcapped, colorful tarns. Rushing streams, challenging mountain passes, local herders, Andean geese, llamas, alpacas, chinchillas, condors and vicuñas, everything seeming intact and undiscovered.

Dont forget you are hiking (above 14,000ft), make sure you are fully prepared, this trek is challenging and very rewarding at the same time. you should be in shape and healthy. We really recommend you to spend at least two to three days in Cusco or in other places with the same elevation to acclimatize, and drink plenty of fluid before starting the hike.

At the scheduled time we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco, and start driving through the South Valley. The ride to the beginning of Rainbow Mountain hike at Quesiuno (4,326 m / 14,189 ft) is approx.3 hours long. Once we arrive to the trail head, our cook will prepare a delicious lunch. After lunch, our horseman will load all the gear on the horses and then we will be able to start the Rainbow Mountain hike uphill, following a small side valley; we will be surprisingly surrounded by the herds of alpacas and llamas; this region is the home of numerous Andean people who own those beautiful animals. In our Rainbow Mountain hike, we will have great views of Ausangate Mountain. We will also hike through a small villages and interact with the local people. If we are lucky enough we will have the chance to see the Vicuñas, the Peruvian National animal.

After approx. 3 hours hike, we will arrive to the campsite of kayrabiri, close by the village of Llamachimpana. After to set up our camp, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery. This campsite is quite high so we recommend travelers to be acclimated before to come to do the Rainbow Mountain hike. We will sleep only one hour away from the famous Rainbow Mountain.

We will continue with our Rainbow Mountain Hike, waking up with a cup of hot coca tea and the beautiful sunrise. After the delicious breakfast prepared by our chef, we will start our Rainbow Mountain Trek, 1 hours uphill hike will let us to arrive to our dreamed destination at Vinicunca Mountain Peru. It is important to visit this place before the crowds.

The Rainbow Mountain (5,100 m / 16,500 ft), is a spectacular geological formation, which is surrounded by a beautiful mountain scenery; after our arrival we will have the opportunity to explore the area and admire this amazing rainbow Mountain. We will spend approx. one hour to take pictures and have snacks while we enjoy the view of the whole Ausangate mountain range.

After to enjoy and admire the Majestic Rainbow Mountain, we will walk back downhill for approx. 2 hours to the lunch place. In the afternoon we will have 3 hour return drive to Cusco, arriving to your hotel around 6 pm.

  • Travel-size tissues and wet wipes–The air is cold and damp so your nose is going to run a lot. Everyone seems to run out of tissues by the end of the trek. In addition, most bathrooms do not have toilet paper (if you even get a bathroom), so wet wipes are key.
  • Bring some meds to Rainbow Mountain & Vinicunca Trek.
  • Iron tablets and pills for altitude sickness. Several people on the hike have varying degrees of altitude sickness and both of these remedies (in addition to the coca tea) are very helpful in alleviating the symptom Rainbow Mountain & Vinicunca Trek.
  • Sun protection Rainbow Mountain & Vinicunca Trek cream (SPF 45 or higher recommended).
